Battery compatibility checker

Close-up of solar inverter internal components and electrical parts

Will a battery work with my existing solar system?

Quick answer: Our compatibility checker asks about your inverter type, system age, panel count and location, then tells you instantly which battery retrofit path applies — AC-coupled, hybrid inverter swap, or straight add-on. It takes under two minutes. If compatible, we arrange a no-obligation survey.

Key facts

Last updated: 28 October 2026

Answer a few quick questions about your existing solar setup and get an instant compatibility assessment for battery retrofit in Scotland. The checker identifies which of the three retrofit paths applies to your system — AC-coupled, hybrid inverter swap, or straight add-on — based on your inverter type and system age.

What the checker tells you

After answering questions about your inverter type, system age, panel count and location, you receive an instant assessment indicating which retrofit path fits your system. If you are eligible, you can request a no-obligation survey to confirm wiring, capacity and an exact price.

What happens after the check

If your system is compatible, we arrange a no-obligation survey at your home. The surveyor confirms your wiring, inverter model, available space and whether G98 or G99 applies based on your DNO area. You get an exact price — no estimate ranges. DNO paperwork is handled for you. The install itself typically takes one to two days.

Your data

The information you submit is used to assess your compatibility and arrange a no-obligation survey if eligible. We do not sell your data. See our Privacy Policy for full details. You can withdraw consent at any time.

How the three retrofit paths compare

The three retrofit paths suit different starting points. AC-coupling with the Tesla Powerwall 3 is the most universal solution because it works with almost any existing inverter — the battery has its own inverter and connects on the AC side, so your solar inverter is left untouched. This is the route we most often recommend for systems installed before 2018 with a traditional string inverter. A hybrid inverter swap replaces your string inverter with a hybrid unit that manages both solar and battery, which is more efficient because power flows from panels to battery without an AC conversion step, but it takes longer to install. A straight add-on is the simplest and usually most affordable route, but only works if your existing inverter is already a compatible hybrid model. The compatibility checker asks the right questions to identify which path fits your system.

Scottish-specific questions in the checker

Because we serve Scotland specifically, the compatibility checker includes questions tailored to Scottish conditions. Your postcode tells us which DNO area you are in — SP Energy Networks or SSEN — which affects whether G98 or G99 applies. Your housing type helps us anticipate siting challenges: tenement flats often need internal installations and possibly co-owner consent, while detached homes with lofts or garages have more options. If you live in a conservation area or a listed building, the checker flags this so the surveyor can advise on any consent considerations. These Scottish-specific factors are why a generic UK compatibility tool is less useful than one designed for Scottish housing, DNO areas, and weather patterns.

Frequently asked questions

What information do I need for the compatibility checker?

You need to know your inverter type (string, hybrid, or microinverter), approximate system age, panel count, and postcode. If you do not know your inverter type, check the unit mounted on your wall or loft — the brand name is usually printed on the front.

How accurate is the online compatibility check?

The checker gives you an instant assessment based on your inverter type and system age. It tells you which retrofit path applies — AC-coupled, hybrid swap, or straight add-on. A no-obligation survey at your home confirms wiring, capacity and an exact price.
