Battery retrofit case studies across Scotland

Solar panels on a suburban UK home with battery storage

Quick answer: We facilitate battery retrofits across Scotland through installer partners. The three retrofit paths — AC-coupled, hybrid inverter swap, and straight add-on — apply to different system types. These are illustrative examples of the types of installations we facilitate, covering Glasgow tenements, Edinburgh villas and Aberdeen bungalows.

We connect homeowners with installer partners for battery retrofits across Scotland. The configurations below illustrate the three retrofit paths in real Scottish settings — system sizes, inverter types and coupling routes. These are illustrative examples of the types of installations we facilitate, not specific project reports.

AC-coupled retrofit: tenement flat, Glasgow

A Glasgow west-end tenement flat with an existing 3kWp solar system on a shared roof, using a 2016-era string inverter. The Tesla Powerwall 3 was AC-coupled — the existing inverter was left in place and the battery connects on the AC side. SP Energy Networks G98 notification applied. Install took one day.

Hybrid inverter swap: detached house, Edinburgh

An Edinburgh detached house with a 4kWp solar system installed in 2015 with a string inverter. The old inverter was replaced with a hybrid unit, and a Duracell Dura5 battery was connected on the DC side. SP Energy Networks G99 prior approval was required because the battery exceeded 3.68kW. Install took two days.

Straight add-on: bungalow, Aberdeen

An Aberdeen bungalow with a 3.5kWp solar system already using a compatible hybrid inverter. A Pylontech US5000 battery was wired directly to the existing hybrid inverter — no inverter replacement needed. SSEN G98 notification applied. Install took one day. This is usually the most affordable retrofit path.

Which path applies to you?

Your inverter type and system age determine which retrofit path is possible. Run the compatibility checker to find out — it takes under two minutes and tells you whether AC-coupling, a hybrid swap or a straight add-on fits your system.

Rural and island retrofits

Rural properties across the Highlands, Islands and rural Aberdeenshire present a different set of considerations. Many rural homes are off the gas grid and rely on electricity, oil or LPG for heating, which makes self-consumption of solar generation particularly valuable. Three-phase supply is more common in rural areas, which can affect G99 thresholds and the battery configuration. SSEN covers these areas, and G99 applications for rural connections may take longer due to network capacity checks. Transport and logistics for delivery of heavy battery units to island locations can add time to the schedule. We discuss these factors with you upfront so the timeline is clear from the outset.

Tenement and flat considerations

Tenement flats in Glasgow and Edinburgh are a significant part of the Scottish housing stock, and many already have solar panels installed on shared roofs. Retrofitting a battery to a tenement flat is possible, but it depends on where the battery can be sited and whether co-owner consent is required. Internal installations in a cupboard or under-stairs area are often the most practical option. The existing solar inverter location — sometimes in a communal close or loft — also affects the wiring route. We assess these factors during the survey and advise on the simplest approach. If consent from co-owners is needed, we explain the process but you will need to obtain agreement under your tenement title deeds.

For four-in-a-block cottages common in Glasgow and the west of Scotland, the situation is usually simpler because each property typically has its own roof and loft space, making battery siting and wiring more straightforward. The surveyor will confirm the layout on the day and recommend the least disruptive installation route for your specific flat or cottage.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real customer installations?

These are illustrative examples of the types of battery retrofit installations we facilitate through our installer partners across Scotland. A no-obligation survey provides details specific to your property and system.

What battery brands do you use?

We assess compatibility for the Tesla Powerwall 3, Duracell Dura5 and Pylontech US5000. The right battery depends on your existing inverter, available space and budget.

Can I see examples in my area?
