We connect Scottish homeowners with the right battery retrofit

Solar panel engineer installing panels on a UK home in Scotland

Quick answer: Battery Retrofit Scotland is a trading name of Scot Energy Efficiency Ltd. We assess your existing solar system for battery retrofit compatibility and connect you with MCS-certified installer partners across Scotland. We are not the installer — we are the compatibility assessment and referral service.

Battery Retrofit Scotland is a trading name of Scot Energy Efficiency Ltd, company number 17408629, registered office 66 Paul Street, London EC2A 4NA. We are not the installer — we are a consultancy that assesses your existing solar system, tells you honestly whether a battery will work, and connects you with installer partners who do the job right.

Our role

Not every battery fits every system. That is why we exist — to assess your existing solar setup, tell you which of the three retrofit paths applies (AC-coupled, hybrid inverter swap, or straight add-on), and make sure the installer we connect you with is the right fit for your configuration.

We serve homeowners across Scotland — from the Central Belt to the Highlands and Islands. Every installer we connect you with holds the relevant certifications for their trade. We install through MCS-certified partners.

Why compatibility matters

Most battery installers sell one brand and one approach. We assess your actual system first — your inverter type, system age, wiring, and DNO area — then tell you which path makes sense. If your inverter cannot accept a battery, we say so. If AC-coupling is simpler and cheaper than a hybrid swap, we say so.

Our assessment covers the Tesla Powerwall 3, Duracell Dura5, and Pylontech US5000.

Where we operate

We cover all of Scotland. The DNO landscape matters: SP Energy Networks covers central and southern Scotland (including Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dundee), while SSEN covers the north, Highlands and Islands (including Aberdeen and Inverness). DNO rules affect whether your battery needs G98 notification or G99 prior approval, and we handle that paperwork as part of the process.

How we stay independent

We do not sell batteries. We do not earn commission from recommending one brand over another. Our assessment is based on what fits your system, not what we are incentivised to sell. If your existing inverter already supports a battery, we tell you that a straight add-on is the simplest route — even though it is usually the most affordable option. If AC-coupling is the only viable path for an older string inverter, we say so clearly. And if a battery simply will not work with your current setup, we tell you that too rather than pushing a sale.

Our role ends at assessment and connection. The installer partner carries out the survey and installation, holds the workmanship guarantee, and handles warranty claims on the hardware. This separation keeps our advice honest — we have no incentive to recommend a more expensive route than you need.

Scotland's energy landscape

Scotland's housing stock is older and more varied than much of the UK. From Glasgow tenements built in the late nineteenth century to post-war council estates and modern timber-frame developments across the Central Belt, the wiring, roof structures and meter arrangements differ widely. These differences affect which battery retrofit path is open to you and where a battery can be physically sited.

The Scottish climate also plays a role. Longer summer days produce large midday surpluses that a battery captures, while shorter winter days mean off-peak charging from the grid matters more. The west of Scotland is cloudier than the east, which spreads generation more evenly across the day — a pattern that suits battery storage well. Our assessments take both housing type and local weather patterns into account, so the advice you receive reflects the reality of generating solar power in Scotland rather than generic UK averages.
